Filling in the Gaps

Hey Family!

Thanks for the letters, as usuall, they were a huge boost! It has been a hard work [week], but the Lord is really changing me through my trials, which are smaller than they seem sometimes. haha but first I wil answer some questions quickly.

Medical, about halfway through the first transfer my sternum was giving a lot of trouble. Was hurting at nights, and especialy when I sneezed (Happens a lot when you are always staring into the blaring Brazilian sun ;) ). So I talked to the mission president's wife (as much as I didn't want to). She told me that she would talk to the head doctor guy over Brazil, and then call me back. But he called me that night, and gave me some medication to take. But its all good now, no worries! And the dog, I don't think had rabies, but who knows! haha Im fine. I dont need to get shots or anything. This time ;)

Haha I was absolutley kidding about finishing that sandwich. I'm not that sick. yet. But you do really learn to look past things like ants crawling through your cookies. It's really not that important, especially when you are hungry.

But in regard to the past week, it has been a hard one. I have been trying to change a few things, follow some rules in our companionship, and our apartment. It hasn't been easy. Especially when you are young, and they are all real old on the mish. But I have been praying a lot, and the Lord has shown me ways to say things, and ways to improve.

The first things I was always doing was fixing things. Just saying, "Hey, this isnt right. We need to follow this rule the President set for us." This made my companion pretty upset. (I've discovered he has a touch of a temper, haha).

But I took two or three days where I just swallowed my pride and only said positive things. Only talked about how well we were doing, he was teaching, and stuff like that. That seemed to make a difference. He hasn't accepted any of my ideas to my face, but slowly, I can see him doing lil, tiny things I suggested. Ways I thought we could work more efeciently and such.

I am still overwelmed at what Im not doing, and what we need to improve, but focusing on his strengths amd what he is doing well has really helped us both. He really teaches really well, and has a good heart. Its been tough to communicate withhim though. He has an odd accent, and mumbles. And doesn't like to repeat himself, or really talk that much at all haha. I'm learning a good deal of humility and patience. But I'm startin to get him to open up a bit, which is awesome, even if I have no clue what he is saying!

One Saturday I woke up and was wondering if I was supposed to teach the advanced English class again. (It is taught in all english, and is a load of fun). Last week I was just subbing. But I woke up the American zl. (English has to be taught by Americans. They get mad if its Brazilians, even if they speak well). Zl said that he wasn't going to teach. So I grabbed his phone (as he went back to sleep) and called every American in the zone. No one wanted to teach, everyone had excuses! So I went from maybe teaching advanced, to having to teach both classes by myself! (Thats like 30 people!). I finally called Elder Mourtsen who is new, like two weeks. And he taught advanced, and I taught basic. Without any help, or a lesson plan! My companion doesn't speak any english, and refuses to learn. He sat outside the class while I taught. That really bugged me at first, but I got over it. The class went really well though, the Lord answered my prayers. The people were all really patient, and taught me a bit of Portuguese while I was teaching them English!

I have been getting myself up :) Haha very proud of this. It is really good! No one else gets up at 6:30, so its really quite, and I have had a TON of time to read the Book of mormon. A ton. Sometimes 4 hours a day.

It is amazing. I have received so much strength from that book. I know that it is true, and i know it has a lot of power! I wanted to get up earlier so that I could work out and also have more time to read the Book of Mormon, so I started getting up at six. Then, the other night, I talked to my comp about gettin up at 6 30. He said he would, if I didn't set my alarm for 6:00. So I said deal. But this crazy thing has happened, Ive been getting up at six with out my alarm! It is a great blessing to read before I work out, and then after again! And Ive been making some really great food. Unfortunately, my comp still sleeps in, despite my blasting of music, and such. But I am tryin to help, and trying to do my part, like President asked.

We whitewashed the area. Well, we split the area the ZLs had, they had been working with two wards.

The only thing I need is a workout plan. A pull up bar, and maybe P90X. Ask Ross about that. If I could get that, that would change my mission :) Surely I would baptized over 100 that next transfer.

I am super excited about our neighbors! I have been thinking about them a lot lately. They are going to be such wonderful members, and will really be blessed because of this, and will be able to bless many other people

Mom, that is sweet about the client in Cali. Sounds like you are really doing well with that! W, I am so proud. Keep reading those books! [Books on electricity] Keep that up. You will build great things. We will build something really great when I get back! Whoa J! $140 on cans?! For what ! That is awesome!

Well, Im gonna go, but the work is moving along here! We have a few people marked for baptism. One asked us on the street to teach her and her family. Her family are all members, but super inactive. But they are great people. And she really wants to be baptized, a lot.The only guy is a guy named Edezio. I invited him to be baptized on the first street contact, and he accepted! Brazil is nuts! I love it! I am really learning a lot, and really being pushed here by the Lord. This is good :) I am so happy to be here, and to be able to represent the Lord.

Well, love you all!

Bye !Elder L!

Caution: Don't read while eating?

[This email leaves a few questions a mom wants to follow-up on -- such as what medication are you finishing up on? Shelly - I think you will really laugh at this letter!]

Hey English speaking people!

It has been a good week here in this new area, and with the new comp and the ZLs living with us, it has been a solid week. Ill give you a few highlights before answering some questions.

Investagators. I'd love to tell you about them all, but there are two many, and I don't know any of them yet. (Well, enough to talk about em). But one is this cool guy named Alex. He´s 20, and has a scholarship to play ball at Mississippi, I think . . . one of the states over there. He's way good at basketball. And huge. We asked him how he was doing with the law of chastity, and he just looked at us. And with the funny grin he's got, he said, "Thats pretty hard, but I'm keeping it." Hes a funny guy, and has a super strong testimony already.

Health update. I finally got off the medication. That is good, mostly because its super spendy! But the head doctor for missionaries in Brazil is super cool, and really helpful. He is also from Oregon. Most missionaries never talk to him, but I got to in my first transfer! Alwaya knew I was special :) But I am doing great now, and I'm workin out again.

I also got bit by a dog last week! That was cool, hurt like crazy too. About took my hand off!

Oh. Yeah. I came home on wednesday, super hungry. So we stopped at the corner store up the street. (This house has no food. We only eat once a day! I'm losing a ton here. But hopefully, finally my comp will allow us to go buy something today) Anyways, I bought two rolls with ham and cheese. About halfway through the 2ND, I looked at my roll, and it was SWIMMING with worms. Turns out that cheesey filling wasn't cheese. So I finished it. And got some more medication . . . for the worms this time. That was fun. That's how I celebrated your bithday Diane :)

A lot of people in this area call me Elder Johnson, who was the last American in this area. We look a lot a like (I guess) So I'm gettin used to that name. In my last area, everybody called me Elder Grandão, which means huge. I don't feel huge any more, that's for sure! I'm about to drop under 100 kilos.

I got your package! Right before interviews with president! Perfect timing, because I was wearing my no-show socks, and that package had some others to put on right before I went in! The package was super great, thanks a ton! Peanut butter is amazing! Always send that, haha, I love it! Also the family calender was perfect! Nice picture, S! I used that lil' Plan of Salvation puzzle to teach the other day. It was cool. Thanks a ton!

I also got a package from Diane, thank you! Italy looks a lot like Brazil, except with more color. Its odd. I also got a really nice christmas card, haha. And that letter from Katy J . . . whatever her new name is. That was pretty much perfect timing, it talked about companionships. Thanks for that!

My interview went well, but I got roasted a bit. He really wanted me to help my companions follow the rules more. I need to help them fix their problems. I'm a pretty chill guy when it comes to other people. As long as I'm keeping my part, I'm happy. But I learned that thought process doesn't work here. I need to be helping others follow the rules, too.

He also asked about my companion. He said it in a really strange way though. Like he was expecting it to be bad. Then ZLs told me that I've been put with this guy to help him out, and then told me good luck. I'm a bit scared about that, and what president said. But for the most part, things have been chill. I am gonna have to carry a lot more weight them I'm used to. I think I need to help my apartment get up on time. They all woke up about 10 today. Not really my strong point there, but President told me pretty straight up I need to help them out. I always banked on my comps getting up on time! Guess its about time I learned it ;)

Thanks for the letter! Valentine's Day here is sometime in March or something, maybe June, I dont remember.

My area here is good. Real good. The members are amazing! The stake pesident challenged all the men, and some women too, I think, in the stake to have ten hours of missionary work each month! So we always have divisions and FHEs and stuff. It is amazing.

Its amazing how much the members make a huge difference! I was thinking about my membership in the church, and the member I'll be when I go home. This really is a training for life. I will be a much better home teacher, that is for sure, haha, and other stuff too. The roles each member has, play huge roles in the ward, and in the lives of people.

I got a jump rope today, but I can't use it, cause we live on the top floor and the people who live below us get upset. But Ive almost talked one of the Elders into running with me. He said he would Wednesday (We have conference tomorrrow and gotta leave early.)

Well, I'm loving it here in Brazil, living with 6 (4 Eders, 2 ginormous cockroaches). The work is going good. Its hard to get going opening an area, but I am really grateful to be here!

Sounds like the family is doing great! And keep my updated on the V family! Thanks a ton, love you all!

Emergency Tranfers

Feb. 9, 2010

Hey!

Well, it has been a busy week! First off, big stuff. I got transferred today! It was an emergency transfer because of the 17 americans who showed up today. Elder Alves will train one of them. So I got moved to Diadema, not that far off, a good 30-40 min. on the bus. Its in a differnet section of the mission (there are three). This one is Sao Paulo.

I'm was pretty sad about that. I loved that last area. I really loved the people there, and we were really starting to move things there! We just set up a sweet system for divisions with the ward members, and we were workin with Construction. And our investigators were finally clicking. And I loved Elder Alves. (And yes, yoda heads do come from that area.) We worked super well together, and really had a blast with the work! It was really hard to leave that place. I'm thinking about having Dad call Messias, the construction guy/ best ward mission leader ever. He is super cool. A great example to me!

My new comp is Elder Rouza. He is definitely a ton different than Elder Alves. I don't know anything about him, but it should be good. We are living with the ZLs, one American, and one Brazilian. Should be fun, never lived with four in all my vast experience on the mission.

Will hopefully get someone to run with! However, Elder Alves and I solved this problem. We decided to run to appointments to make more. IT was AMAZING. He thought it was hilarious because I was always so happy after. Its a super good workout to run in a church clothes, especially the shoes, in 90+ Brazilian, when youre fasting.

Reguarding water, we all have water bottles with filters. Super nice. We can drink anywhere. All the missionaries get them they show up. Its just hard, and also weird o use them during meals. They find it a little rude, I think. But thank you! You can send me peanut butter instead ;)

Thats sweet about Dad and Jeremy going to attend General Priesthood session in Utah. All the people here are all super amazed when you tell them you've seen the prophet, heard his voice, shook his hand. That really is a blessing.

Thats sad about that truck! [It leaks water into the cab making it a bit swampy.] Fix it! I was just telling my friends about that truck the other day.

We have zone conference next Tuesday. P'day will be on monday! Ill see if I got any packages then. Thanks for sending them! Also, I got the letters from the kids and Dad yesterday, was really good to read them, thank you!

I learned quite a bit of good construction vocab, and even burned my hand moving cutting a nice bit of steal. I love construction ;) [While Elder Jake loves construction, he tends to be a bit accident-prone. Getting some type of injury is not unusual.]

Davi and his mother came to church on Sunday! We showed up to get them as usual, and they were all ready and dressed. Lookin snazzy. I almost cried. I was so happy! I poured so much into those two, it was wonderful to see them improving. What made the difference was that we told them we could get a ride for them when Davi had his physical therapy this week. Its amazing how much a little service will do.And they both loved church! LOVED it. They were raving about it. And Davi even participated in Sunday School, Which was combined with every one over 12! There were a ton of people, but he was comfortable putting in his two cents. Such a good day.

Today, I went to say good bye. And I invited him to be baptized sunday. He will. I am super excited for him. He really wants to be a missionary.

Sounds like the family is doing great! Thank you for everything and for filling me in on your lives! I'm in a hurry, I still got my stack of bags here. Going to the apartment now.

Love ya! BYE!

Language Boost

[I apologize for not posting this last week.]

Hello Family and friends!

This week has been really freakin good. Because of the fact that Elder Alves doesnt know anybody, I have had to talk, a lot, and lead discussions. It has been amazing for my Portuguese. It has takin off. I am tryin really hard to teach Elder Alves english, but Im a lil ashamed, and kinda proud that it has been hard for me to speak only English with him in the apartment, as we agreed. I am so greatful for this trial, of having to speak a lot. Though it has been really hard, and I've said a ton of prayers, it has really pushed me, and I am really happy and grateful for that.

I'll answer a few questions.I haven't gotten the package yet, but I did get some letters. Not sure from who yet, my LZ told me he'd give em to me some time this week. Whoever you are, thank you! I don't think they forward packages until zone conference, but I dont really know!

My new companion is great. I get along with him really well, and we work well together. HE is a really happy guy, and just enjoys the work. He is from, brace yourself for some horrile spelling, Forteleca. Everyone knows that, before he says anything, because of his yoda head. We make a good team. Its really great to be part of a team, unstead of just followng around someone and always having no dea whats going on.

Portuguese is really helpful when working with Brazilians. I have been makin more contacts, and we have been teaching a couple of guys on a construction crew. Its just like summer. Just a bunch of youth 16-19 workin for a ward member. We have one of them scheduled for baptism, and the others arent far behind. We are going to work with them tomorrow, I am excited to do some construction. I miss it so much.I also have had the strongest desire to fly the past 5 weeks or so. Not to fly home or anything haha but just to fly. I really need to get my pilots license. Which hopefully doesnt include a spelling test. But we arent authorized to fly on the mission. . . yet.

We have had a ton of flooding this week, we went to contact some families on Thursday and found urselves walking in water up to my waist. The whole bairro was like that! and in the favella, a few houses washed away. It is crazy. Really hard to visit people. We will walk in the water in most neiborhoods, but not in the favella. Is super dirty and has lots of rats.

Thanks for the forwarded from the Burnettes. I will contact Pres today I think, Ill ceck with zls first.Ward leaders are kinda non existant. I have no idea who they are. I have met a few, and they ask a lot of us, but we are really tryin to et them to work with us. And it is startin to work a bit. Pretty pumped.

Davi is bein difficult. Really its his grandma, who he lives with. She always has an excuse why she cant go to church, and wont let him go with out her. Really frusrtrating for us, and for Davi as well. We are prayin and hopin to do somethin tomorrow. We have a good lesson planned up, and with the lords hel, maybe itll work!

Ill translate that letter and try to get an interview this week. Once I find out who the RC pres is.

Food. Rice and beans. Everyday. Thats it! Its pretty good. HAvent eaten anything else weird or anything. Every once in awhile we have spagetti. Or stronganoff. I love that!We get fed really well, too well. The sisters here will not take no for an answer. Its kinda annoying at times. Ruin a perfectly great meal because i ate five plates and she was upset I didnt eat six. My companion is about 130 lbs. He is suffrin wih this haha

photos. Ill send some next week in the email. ill try and send some on cd or dvd. Does dvd work? i can fit way more there.

Im in a different area today, playin some soccer. This is the first time ive worn a t shirt in brasil. I cant get my companions to run with me. But their reaasons are good, they cant afford shoes. That made me feel like I was a bit spoiled.

I am really excited about the house [we are doing some home improvements], and a lil bit upset Im not there to be there!

CHoa!

[Elder Jake posted an email to his dad explaing the abrupt ending to this letter.]
Hey Dad! Sorry I cut off the family letter so fast, my comps email just shut down and he lost his whole email. I was able to send mine as soon as I saw that and mine shut down about 3 seconds later!

New comp - Same area

Hey!

That seems like it was a very busy week! I am sure it would have been great to be there, but I really would rather be here, sorry Katie! The pictures were great! Ward has a nice beard going on. I was tryin to figure out which of our modern prophets was strangling Cody. Lorenzo Snow? Brigham? Who knows.

Hey Dad! I read the conference talk about fathers and sons the other day and I was once again reminded how great of a father you were, and obviously still are! Real quickly, I was wondering if you could give me some advice on humility? Something I see a lot of missionaries struggle with, and as I start to get a hold of things here, something I'm really scared of. I want to be humble, I really do. And I think you are very good at this. Any advice?

How is work going? And the High Council? Let me know what else you are up to! Keep up the missionary work. Seems like you are doing great things!

Mom, I'm glad you were able to teach that marrriage class. That is really important! The gospel really has all the answers. I've seen how it has changed Fransico and Helena here. And even if it was just two couples.

My companion said he doesn't like makin contacts because he made tons last tranfer, and it only led to two baptisms. "Only two. baptisms." I about smacked him! Haha every person is really important, something I have really come to know!

Speaking of companions, I got a new one! Elder dos Reis was made zone leader, down by the beach. He was an awesome companion, more than I probably gave him credit for in these letters haha. But he will be missed, I really liked working with him, despite my complaints. I really learned to look past stuff. I expected him to be perfect, and was annoyed when he wasn't. But we can't be perfect. So I can't expect that. I'm learning better than ever to love uncoditionally, and not worry about faults. This is good for me. But above all, Elder dos Reis was a real good companion, and I'm lookin forward to takin what he told me and tryin to improve lil by lil!

American music is playin again haha. I hear more here than I did before my mission. Its always playin. Jason Mraz. I'm tryin not to like it too much ;) Also Coca Cola, and soda. I hardly ever drank it before the mish, rarely! Never Coca Cola, and for quite awhile haven't drunk any soda. But here that's all we drink except when I'm home. That's all anyone ever offers, and you can't ask for water for two reasons. One, it's too dirty to drink. Two, they get mad. I know! I've had soda so much! But I drink so much!

I am stayin here in Sao Bernardo, Rudge Ramos, with my new comp. Elder Alves de Souza. Super cool guy. his first tranfer as senior, and he is excited to work hard. He's kinda weird, and looks a bit like Yoda, but Im excited. He said his favorite thing is to do contacts - Elder Dos Reis least favorite, so I'm excited to do more of that. Really pumped that the Lord puts us together to help us where we need it!

I'm glad you got to see D, and I'm pumped shes doing great. I gotta run, but life here is good. I got to Baptize Cicêra last Sunday! Was quite suprised when she asked me! Three weeks in a row, shootin for four! But we are going go teach!

I know that the Book of Mormon is true. I know that we have a Heavenly Father that loves us. He gave us these bodies, and during football, I could really realize how marvelous of a gift that is. And whatever success I had in high school, was all because of my loving Heavenly Father. I know he lives, and that his son, Jesus Christ lives. And that his restored gospel is on the earth today. And that brings me more joy that I could ever get any where else. Even from football. I know how much joy this gospel brings me, and how this gospel, the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ, has changed so many lives here. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints is true, the true church of Christ. I will always be greatful for the knowlegde of that.

ByeLove, Elder Jake!

S, I'll write you next week, sorry! Love you, too!

Sao Paulo updates

We've been out of town attending a wedding and a funeral. Here's Elder Jake's latest.

Hey!

Well, I didnt get a letter from the rest of the fam, but I was glad to get yours! Sounds like you are really having a blast... that is some real solid service right there! One of our investigators, Davi, is recovering from his surgery, and Saturday, I think, I got to help him walk to the end of the drive way with his walker. Super weird. A million memories of my Dad flooded into my mind with all the times I went to work with you. Some really good memories, I am reallly glad I had those opportunities! It was really fun to help Davi as I'd seen and done with you before!

Davi didnt make it to church yesterday. When we showed up to pick him up, he said he had a stomachache. I tried to talk him into it, but before I could get a word out, my companion said its all good, shook their hands and walked out the door. I was shocked. And a bit upset. I really wanted to try harder, it is super important to get him to church. On the way to church, I really felt like I needed to return. My companion didn't want to, so I grabbed a member from the ward and we went back. We gave Davi a blessing, and the member said some really powerful things. The spirit was really strong. Davi didn't come, but I know that the family knows how important it is now. It was also really cool to do a division with a member. First time for me, but I loved it.

The language is really picking up. I can understand almost everything these days. In church and lessons, its almost all there, and I can lead a lesson with out too many problems at all.

Conversations about other stuff are more difficult, but they are really getting there. I am just super pumped. Loving the gift of tongues. It is real, and has greatly helped me the past week.

Fransico and Helena were baptized yesterday! was really cool. They are such an amazing couple. When were found them, they were on the verge of breaking up, and/largely because Franscico had a problem with every part of the word of wisdom. But now, they are completely different! They are so happy, and he stopped everything! So cool. He even stopped bringing coffee for his co-workers, because "if its bad for me, its bad for them too!". He started bringing juice! Francsico asked me to baptize him. I was more then willing, but a lil nervous to do this. The Portuguese went well, and I didn't botch his name too bad! haha He tried to dunk himself at the begining of the prayer, and I had to stop him haha he was pretty eager. He is so excited about church, and goes out of his way to meet members and all, its really cool how much the gospel can change lives.

Helena´s mom told us the other day that she is incredily grateful for the gospel, and the change in her daaughter and son-in-law. She said she started reading the BoM everynight along with the Bible which she has always read. She knows it is true. Only a matter of time with her.

We have another family, of Maria Clauria (14) and her sister, and mom. They came to church yesterday, and they loved it. it was really great. I often have to remind myself of the great work we are doing here.

I still get frustrated and overwhelmed with the stuff we aren't doing. I have good reason to a lot of times, for example still not teaching people we have had a baptisimal date with for two weeks! He, Rafael, was supposed to get baptized yesterday, but we haven't taught him since we invited him to be baptized two weeks ago! Or when people who ask for the lessons dont get them! Or when we still havnt returned to teach the family for whom I taught my first lesson on the mission. They were super receptive and all, but we haven't gone back!

This creates a bit of tension in our companionship, along with other things, but I am really gratful for Elder dos Reis, and the good work he does do! He really loves these people, and he really teaches well. People just love him instantly, and they trust him. That is really important. This area hadn't had a baptisim in 6 months, then he showed up, had one in that transfer, and we´ve had four in this one. This man really knows how to teach. And I am learning a ton from him. He knows how to change lifes. Super good missionary, and a great man.

Well, last week, we had Novo Força, which is the training conference thing for all the new missionaries in the mission. Was really fun, did a ton of contacts, and learned alot. Also received a fairly blunt rebuking to all the missionaris who don't follow the rules. Seems like there were a lot of my district friends whose trainers told them as well, that "that's not really how it works" or "this rule doesn't apply to our mission" and stuff like that. Present Richardson is a good man, and did not beat around the bush at all, and pointed out all these "lies of the Devil". Rules have been much easier to follow after that, not perfect, but better. That meeting was a lot of fun, and great to see all my friends from the MTC. Really great men. All of them are here except Elder Dalton, who is now serving in Baltimore, til he gets his visa.

Had a interview with the president, was pretty uneventful, but he was really helpful, and helped me with some aspects of missionary work I wanted to improve. He also told me that I can't use snapfish. Which is lame, because I realized that last week it only downloaded half of them, and none of the ones from brazil! He said the only two sites we can use are myldsmail, and lds.org. Said if he allowed one other site, people would start justifying all sorts of sites, and thats not a can of worms he wants to open. So we meed to find another way to get pictures! I can use myldsmail, but it takes for ever, and doesnt always work. Let me know your ideas!

Another thing President said is that our missionaries are good. He said that the vast majority of our missionaries try hard to follow all the rules, and he knows that to be true. I was glad to hear that, and have also seen that to be true after he pointed that out in Nova Força. I am greatful my companion is pretty good with rules. Hes not perfect, but neither am I. But we are trying, and we are doin well. We got transfers comin up next week. My companion is pretty set on leaving, he's been tellin people he will. But it is very likely, seems President doesnt like to keep people in one place for longer than two transfers. That leaves me to play the wonderful mind game of who will be my next companion, American, or Brasilian, someone I know, or someone I've never seen before. But who knows! I'd be okay with change. Keeps things interesting, but I'd be fine with another transfer here with Elder dos Reis.

Well, despite all my complaining, I hope you all know how much I love it here. I am really just so happy to serve, and to be helping these great people. Someone yesterday asked me if I was homesick. That actually caught me off gaurd, the thought had never crossed my mind. I love all of you a lot, don't get me wrong, but I have been waiting for this my whole life, and I'm not about to spend my time wishin I was home.

It is truly a blessing and an honor to be here, serving the Lord. Its never easy, and at times the burden of all I feel I need to do gets too hard to bear, but that is where our message gets even sweeter. We don't have to bear it alone. I have learned so much here, through all my weaknesses and faults, and have really learned to rely on the Lord, and not on myself. Alma 26:12 has been something I've really been tring to remember, and to live.

Also, a wonderful blessing, I found a copy of the Confernce Liahona. I have been shredding through that thing. I can't put it down. It is filled with the secrets to happiness, and how to live our lives a lil better. I am super grateful for the living prophet we have today, and for all the general authorites. I am also super grateful I speak english, because I hear their distinct voices everytime I read. My life is great, thanks to your love, and the Love of my Savior. Thanks for everything! Hope your week is fantastic, hopefully Ill get to write next Tuesday, depends on transfers!

Love,Elder Jake

Oi Pessoas!

Oi Pessoas!

Well, tell Uncle Aaron Happy Birthday, I suppose. On Sunday, we ate lunch with two younger couples, and I couldn't figure out who they reminded me off. That is until one of them excused himself from the table because he needed to fart. Then it hit me. Uncles Aaron, Derek, and Ward. Such a profound, sophisticated group of men. Haha!!

Well, to answer some questions. The language is coming along! I gave a talk in church on Sunday, and when I realized how incredibly short the one I had scripted out, I even expanded and added a bunch on the spot. Really nice to have the Holy Ghost as a companion! I have just been talking a ton. Trying to follow the example of Adam ;) [friend Adam Mikkelsen] and it has helped a ton. I just talk to my companion a ton, even though he maybe doesn't have anything to say. But it has helped a ton.

We aren't teaching English lessons. My companion doesnt want anything to do with it and said I can set it up next transfer. (He is set on being transferred since he has been here two transfers. Not sure that'll happen, but whatever!) I'm sad, cause I really want to teach English. I think it would be an excellent way to find people.

Here, the biggest problem isn't initially finding people, its finding them the second time! They are super chill with time, and my comp doesn't really like to make appointments anyways, so its a huge guessing game. Haha but it works strangely enough, even though I think we could be teaching more and all.

And yes, W would be an excellent canidate to translate for me!

We taught more lessons this week, but for example, we have two or three people with baptisimal dates that we didn't even visit once this week! AHHH! you gotta be kidding me! But things are slowly improving. Gustavo was baptized this week! was super cool. I loved it. Was a great event, and his non-member family all came. Was sweet.

Davi didn't make it to church this week, nor anyone else, except Francisco and Helena. They are on fire, and are set to be baptized saturday! Super excited! We are going to have to move back the other week, and I am tryin to work with my companion to get people, or us! to go to church WITH some of them. He doesn't seem to think its important. Hmmm. Not sure why haha

Oh, we didn't play soccer, mainly because my companion didnt want to. But Gustavos interview was that night, so we got to sit there and watch them play which was almost as good . . .

That is crazy about the wards! I am pretty excited The Fs are in our ward though, such a legit family. Had a dream awhile back I trained B when he served in my mission. I have a lot of wierd dreams here, a lot.

At least you have ward boundaries! I recently found out that our area is in two wards, but we just bring them all to our ward. Not sure this is in accordance with church policy, but whatever. If I understand correctly, about 25% the ward, who have callings, dont even live in our ward boundaries! Crazy!

That is really sad about Aunt Patty. I always loved her. I always think of her when I see MoTab. She was just always super happy and fun. I really like her a ton! I am very grateful for the plan of salvation as well, it is such a wonderful blessing! I will pray for the family, as usual!

I'm still freakin a bit that K is getting married. And Im kinda mad she hasn't writtne me a letter yet. I hope K's wedding goes well, I wish I could make her a lamp. I miss lamps.

Speaking of weddings, we went to a wedding this weekend. The coolest family in the sister's area had a wedding/baptism. Was super cool, this is what the work is all about. They invited me and my companion to the temple sealing in a year. I love the temple, I miss it. But I have been using the picture of the family, and of the temples to teach and it is always a spiritual experience for me.

Yesterday was a crazy day. So good. We had that district leader training thing again. So me, and two others from my MTC district were able to go make contacts with a Brazilian elder. Me and Elder Adamas took one side of the street, and Elder Garret and the Brazilian took the other side. It was crazy hard, and tons of fun. We made a ton of contacts. We didn't get a lot of addresses, but passed out cards with church times and locations and taught a bunch. One time, we did get an address, and I had no idea what his address was. Couldn't understand it. People just spit those things out wicked fast. So I just gave him my planner and he wrote it down. Super good man, was really intrigued by the prospect of living together with his young famly for etenity.

We also talked to one man for 20-30 mins! Was crazy. He talked a lot about wars in the east, the the monster USA, haha, and about different churches and everything, and how he was pure blood Arab. I was truely amazed at how well I understood him. I brought the discussion to the Gospel as often as I could. I realized that I do understand really well. Not as well as I would like, but still, what a great miracle.

After that, we taught Maria Clauda and her family. Three solid baptisms in the family there are three sisters and one mother. And about of others running around somewhere, so we got more baptisms there too possibly. But one of those three daughters is a active member, except she works most Sundays. But she is trying, and goes when she can, to activities and whatnot, and is close with all the members and reads and all. Her two sisters, one is 14, Maria, and one is 23ish, and has a yound girl. She is single. Family is super legit, golden. We taught them, and then helped the 23 yr old build an Ikea closet wardrobe in her new appartment-thing!

Got a lot of experience with that haha even though her unit was at least 20 years old, and well-worn. But it turned out well! IT was so hot in that room. All tiled - walls and floors. And that precious lil girl was sreaming like a lil banhshee the whole time! I still have a head ache from that. Freals. Its throbbin hahabrought back so many memories of a girl back home ;)

After that, we did some tracting, and set up a FHE with Maria and her family and some other families in the ward. We got all the members at the designated house, and then we went to get Maria and them. It was raining HARD. and had been. Really hard. The streets were all flooded. Me and my companion ran to her house up the "river" That was up to my knees! It was awesome.

The roads here are super sketch, so in my running, I stepped in a pot hole beneath the water that was super deepand tore a nice hole in my pants. I am gonna need more clothes. haha Nothing fits any more anyways. Almost need to buy a new belt. I'm down to a 34 or maybe even less haha so crazy well They didn't ended up coming because of the crazy rain, but we have FHE tonight with the same people.

After that, we were walking home and met a nice drunk man we had contacted awhile back (he was sober then). He was wasted, so we had some fun shouting hallelujahs and the like, much to his enjoyment.

Then we helped Yoda. Yoda was a lil tiny old man with big ears and a cane. Lived on the streets. We helped him carry his stuff to his designated door way. He was very grateful. He, however, walked really slow, and more than once I thought about throwing him on my back and running. Maybe doing some push ups, or one-armed hand stands while balancing rocks with my mind.

Well, it has been a great week, and hopefully will get better! We have transfers in two weeks, I think. Which should be exciting. I'm down for change, but Im fine without. Speaking of numbers Dad, and thank you very much for your letters! Both email and snail. (Ill get letters and packages at interviews, zone conferences and other occasions like that). But the goal for this ward is 33 baptisms this year. The ward! How crazy is that! The work here is revoltingly awesome. Our zone had ten baptisms last week!

In regards to money, when I spend any, I will let you know! Thanks for everything and for the letters and the prayers!

Have a good week!
Love, Elder Jake

Return trip to the Internet Cafe

Hello again people.

For some reason we are back in internet for today. Not sure why. My comp wasn't too clear, but hey! I'm okay with that!

Today was really good, and I really enjoyed it! Sorry if my first letter was a downer today, I was a bit overwhelmed before, and as usual, I felt great afterwards.

We went bowling today! That was cool. Also, I had my first English contact since I got to Brazil! Some guy stopped me in the streets, being the only American amoung a load of Brazilian missionaries. He spoke pretty good English, suprisingly, and wanted to know where the church was and if we gave English lessons. This was an excellent question I have asked many times! Turns out we don't, but I talked to the ZLs and we might get that set up!

One of the other elders in our district is American, even though he doesn't look it. He wasn't there today for some reason, but I guess I might be able to teach English with him sometime soon. I hope so. I really love teaching English. It makes me feel better and I get to express myself without getting a headache ;) haha

So I don't speak Portuguese on Pdays any more, trying to help my comp. I trulylove that, and I learn quite a bit of Portuguese as he figures stuff out. Today we have FHE with Fransisco and Helena.

And tomorrow! Tomorrow we are FINALLY playing soccer. I am gonna get worked since I have zero skill with the sport. But I found if I scream and run at people, that is an effective more for me. Haven't tried it in soccer yet. But I am just excited to move! (I have never been more restless than I am now! There us so much to do and we spend so much time sitting!) Its with the ward, there are quite a few investigators going, and members as well.

Also tomorrow is the blitz teaching of Gustavo. We will teach him three lessons, and then have his interview for Sunday, pumped! On of our other investagators is Rafial (spelled that wrong). I contacted him and his friends on the street one day. He is 19 and is super fly. We taught him the first lesson and he loved it! He was totally down for baptism, after he prayed to know for sure. He has/hadproblems with family. His mom was yellin some words at us that I don't yet know (I wonder why . . . ) when we were talkin to him, so we taught him in the house of the ward missionary. This young man hasn't had it easy, and he was lookin for this. Definitely prepared by the Lord.

Well, I'm off! See ya! Thanks for everything! It's raining again, just like everyday this week! I love it, reminds me of good ol' Oregon. My comp doesn't love it, haha, but that's too bad. The only down side is it is hard to whistle in the rain. So I just stick to singing. But I do that all the time anyways. Been loving those hymns.

My comp is still going. I thought he was done, so I'll just type til he stops . . .

McDonalds here is not that great, maybe worse than back home! haha! All the Brazilians assume I love the place, but it was an experience.

OH! Last Wednesday we went to the federal police! We had to do visa stuff, and almost all my friends from the MTC were there, even those servin in other missions (except Cuiba). That was amazing, my whole district is here except one elder, poor guy, and pretty much everyone else from our floor is here! It was super cool to see them all again, and talk about the work. Such great people. I love 'em to death. One of my friends from the MTC is companions with Ben, my roommate from college! I haven't seen Ben yet, but I am excited. That was such a cool day. Took forever, but it was worth it. We all have Brazilian companions, I think, except two. And it is so cool to see how much we, and especially I have learned since i got here. Also, a lot of missionaries tell us that our district has reallly good Portuguese, better than a lot of missionaries who come from Sao Paulo MTC. That was wonderful to hear for sure. Also makes me feel a ton better about that promise I gave my district. I think it was a promise of God, but kinda like that one group of saints who marched a long ways and then turned around, it wasn't suppoesed to happen. But it absolutely prepared us for this. That was a blessing. Truly an answer to prayers. And turns out almost all of us came the week that was promised. It is cool and amazing to see how the Lord works.

Man, he is still going. What if he is waiting for me like I am for him? I'll ask. . . Nope.

Pictures - I will down load my camera next week. Don't have that many pictures, but I got a billion on my camera from who knows when. I read the rules more carefully today and it just says don't email anyone except on myldsmail, more or less. (Its in Portuguese). So I think I can use snapfish, and when I see president next, I will ask him more specifically. Don't think he'll have a problem. Ill try and take more this week, but its hard, because I have to be careful doing it when we are prosiliting. (Botched that word.)

I have found that the Brazilians seem to be a bit happier than the Americans. A lot of the Americans seem to be dead. haha really strange. Quite grateful that is not me, and that my disrtict is super optimistic, almost to a fault ;)

He's done bye!

Love you all!

Oi -- 1st Letter from today

Hello,

It is so wonderful to hear from you people every week, and to get the letters of my other missionary friends!

Life here in Brazil is crazy. I love it so much, and I love so much the work! Getting to talk to people everyday about this wonderful Gospel is truly a blessing in my life. I am so grateful to be here, and for this opportunity! It truly is a dream come true, I have waited so long for this, and I still can´t believe its finally here sometimes!

This past week has been both absolutely fantastic, and well as really hard. Convienently the days seem to alternate. Loving that.

I'll start out with why its been hard, and then move on to how legit the life of a missionary is. I'm surrounded by Brazilians, who are the most amazing people ever, and I can´t really communicate with them. I can have basic conversations, but I can't really get to know them like I want, and like I need to be an effective missionary. I feel like its hard to be myself even especially with the other missionaries, because no one speaks English, and I don't speak Portuguese well enough yet. Luckily for Brasil, they don´t yet know the real Elder Jake. They don´t know whats coming! I am learning an immense amount of patience haha and really trusting the Lord, and that is good. I am grateful for it, because it has caused me really to turn to the scriptures. I read the Book of Mormon literally whenever I have free time. I am trying to finish it in Portuguese, and its taken a while. Just started last week, switched over from English. It takes along time as I try to understand each word, but my goal is to finish 1st nephi this week. Which will be hard, but it is super rewarding. I always feel such a strong spirit when I read, and I have learned so much from those first few chapters of 1 Nefí. Its such a wonderful book, and is my way to relax and feel the love of my Savior.

I often get frustrated when my companion reteaches everything I teach, or when we spend two hours walkin around Walmart, and then 4 today in the Brazilin equivilent of Target. But I have learned a lot from my companion, and its amazing what the Lord can teach you when you have so much time to think! I have been super blessed by the Lord, my thoughts have been directed to things I need, things to uplift, and the teach.

One issue I struggled with for a long time is thinking about my family and friends. I felt guilty thinking about you all, but at the same time I can´t help it! My family is the coolest! One day during our down time, The Spirit directed my thoughts to a song Ive only sung once before in my memory, "Each life that touches ours for good." 263 or something. When I thought about the lyrics to this song, I came to wonderful conclusion. I know my Saviors loves me so much more because I can feel it through the love of my friends and family. I am the person I am, as strange and pathetic as that may be ;) because of the people I love! It makes no sense to pretend they don't exist.

So that day I changed, and for the first time taught with those I love, and it made all the difference. You are all such a wonderful motivation to me, and I am very grateful for that! I was able to relax and talk to people more personally, as I would my mother or anyone else from my friends or family. If I have trouble making a contact, I think of my family, or I also like to think of my friends from college, or the McAllister family, people who I've known a relatively short period of time in my life and think of how I would act if I had the chance to meet them for the first time again, knowing how fly they were going to be. This has truly made contacts a joy. Although it is strange when my "mother" rejects the contact because she is in a hurry to go smoke some mary jane. . .

Well, the work. The work here is amazing! These people are super super humble and responsive. Right now we have six or seven people to be baptized in the next two Sundays! They are all set! All excited! Gustava is next, he will be baptized on Sunday. He is super legit. He has been coming to church for awhile, and when we asked him to be baptized, he was just like sure! We haven't actually taught him any lessons yet, except the first one on my first Sunday. We'll do them all tomorrow.

Francisco and his wife came to church and they came with our Ward missionary who is the coolest man alive. He gives us like 10 references a week. Nuts. He just talks to EVERYONE. Great example for sure. But Francisco and Helena loved church, and are super pumped as well. Just set.

Davi´s mom still hasn't let us take him to church, but this week his health is pickin up like crazy! he is able to set in a chair for the first time in a very long time. Every other lesson we have had he has laid in bed. I was wondering if dad could try and find some talks/devos from NFL players that he could watch on line, obviously theyd have to be in Portuguese. He has got a ton of free time, and he can read, so i thought that might help.

No real time to tell you about the other baptisms coming up but next week I will! My companion and I are doing well although I can still tell he gets shocked when I invite people to be baptized way earlier than he would, I think. haha But I am really loving it here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else! It's not easy, but it is definitely rewarding and just freaking fun.

Side note - I really need some way to work out more. Maybe that door thing R was talking about. Also I think I might actually kill someone if I thought I would get a pull up bar out of it. I have been working out well, and really stepped it up and been runnin a bunch, but I need more. Haha - I'm down to 225. Haven't weighed that much since my sophomore year! haha My clothes are getting pretty lose!

PS - How much money is on my card? Need to know! I love you all and am very grateful for all of you!

ate mais!Elder Jake!
